Chess is a conversation held in silence. Here, it’s also a community: a room full of people who love the game, whether they’re learning how the knight moves or grinding out a rook ending at midnight.

We keep it welcoming, competitive and fun. Bring a friend, bring a rivalry, bring your opening repertoire — or bring nothing at all. Someone will set up a board.

Looking for a chess club in Lowell, Massachusetts? Lowell Chess Club is a free, friendly community for beginners, casual players and experienced competitors across Lowell and the Merrimack Valley.

We meet twice a week in the heart of downtown: Tuesday evenings at Pollard Memorial Library on Merrimack Street, and Sunday afternoons at Little Delights Bakery. Chess sets are provided at the library, and beginner tables and informal lessons are often available, so it is an easy place to learn chess in Lowell.

Chess in Lowell: FAQ.

Do I need to know how to play chess to join?

Not at all. Beginners are welcome at every meeting. Experienced members will teach you the rules, basic tactics and how to play your first games.

Does it cost anything to visit the Lowell Chess Club?

Admission is free at our Tuesday meetups at Pollard Memorial Library. On Sundays we play at Little Delights Bakery, where we ask that you support the bakery with a treat or drink.

Do I need to bring a chess set or clock?

No. Chess sets are available to use at the Pollard Memorial Library meetups.

What kinds of chess does the club play?

Mostly friendly open play, with informal lessons and beginner tables at the library, plus practice games and casual blitz. Players of every level are welcome.

Is there chess for kids and teens in Lowell?

Younger players are welcome with a parent or guardian. Contact the club for details on junior sessions.

Where and when does the club meet?

Every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Pollard Memorial Library (Downstairs Community Room, next to City Hall on Merrimack Street), and every Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at Little Delights Bakery on Merrimack Street in downtown Lowell.
